Anxiety Relief for New Moms Tip #1: Have a Routine

I talk about having a routine in blog posts a lot! I find that having a routine and knowing what to expect from my days makes all the difference. Having a routine gives you one less thing to worry about. You don’t have to prioritize tasks each day because you already know exactly what needs to be done that day. Running a household and a family is much like running a business! The more things you can put on autopilot the better off you will be.

Know which chores you do on which days. Don’t deviate. Stick to your plan. It will give you some control over your crazy life. Find a schedule that works and stick to it! If you would like to download my free ebook with some schedule templates you can grab it below!

Anxiety Relief for New Moms Tip #2: Have Rituals

Research has shown that the idea of having more control can help alleviate feelings of anxiety. A nighttime ritual is exactly that. Something that you can control every single night.  Ending your day the same way each day can bring a lot of peace and serenity to your life.

I have a nighttime ritual that I very rarely deviate from. I look forward to my nighttime routine because I find it extremely soothing and calming. As soon as my day’s tasks are complete I head to my bedroom to begin the nighttime routine.

I first set the tone in my room for relaxation. I close the curtains, drop a few essential oils into my diffuser and turn on some dim lighting. I make sure that my clothes are laid out for the next day and that everything in our bedroom is put away so that the room looks nice and neat.

Next, I take a shower, brush my teeth, moisturize and do all the things. Once I am squeaky clean and relaxed, I crawl into bed to either read or watch a show. After about 20 minutes of either reading or watching TV, I am suddenly so tired that I fall asleep with very little effort.

This is huge for me! I used to have such a hard time falling asleep because I was spending so much time worrying!

This little bedtime ritual requires very little effort. It’s simple, to the point, and incorporates most of the things I need to do at bedtime anyway! But I have found that adding in a few little tweaks here and there have made it rock solid.

A note on essentials oils: essential oils fall into a similar category as a ritual for me. I find something very soothing and calming with just the act of rolling on oils or choosing oils for the diffuser. Read my thoughts on essential oils here.

I really like the Simple Habit app. It has really short 1-5 minute meditations focused on what you need. You can select the duration between 5 minutes (or less) all the way up to an hour. My favorite feature is that you can use the filter to pick the meditation that is right for you at that moment whether it is helping to calm your racing heart, trying to fall asleep, anxious about the day, or even a meditation to go with drinking a cup of coffee.

Anxiety Relief for New Moms Tip #4: Exercise

We are told time and time again that exercise can help lessen anxiety. We all know it’s true. Just do it. It doesn’t have to be anything big like training for a marathon. Just take the baby and dog for a walk around the block.

It will help. I promise.
