Picking a niche can be one of the hardest things you do when deciding on a blog. Many newbie bloggers are worried that they are going to get pigeonholed into their niche or won’t like their niche once they have been writing for a while. While picking your niche is important don’t spend too much time worrying! If you really dislike your niche after a few months you can always rebrand!
But if you want some tips on picking a niche you have to keep in mind 4 important factors.

Niche Tip #1: Are you passionate about your niche?
This is so critical because you are going to be writing about your topic A LOT! You need to be sure you are not going to get bored with your niche! It needs to be something that you are passionate about! Think about topics that you spend a lot of time discussing with friends or something that friends and acquaintances always ask you for help with!
For example, I chose to start my first mommy blog because the minute I got pregnant, I became an information machine. I read books, articles, blog posts, and watched videos. I then talked about what I was learning nonstop! Pretty soon I had friends asking pregnancy, breastfeeding and baby questions! I continue to stay interested in the mommy blog niche because well, I am a mommy! It was an obvious fit!
Niche Tip #2: Is your niche something you know A LOT about?
This is actually something that is slightly optional. You need to either know a lot about the topic OR be willing to do lots of research when writing content. Either way is okay! Creating a blog about something you know a lot about will be easier in the beginning when creating a blog that you have to research every step of the way BUT it is possible!
For example, if you are just getting into a new exciting hobby and you plan to learn a lot about this new hobby you will probably have a lot to write about in your blog! You will be able to learn as you go, and educate others during your learning process!
When I got bitten by the blogging bug I started my second blog and wrote all about blogging and content marketing. It was easy because I had learned so much in a short period of time and had plenty to offer others! But if you had told me a year ago that I would have started a blog about blogging and content marketing I wouldn’t have believed you because I didn’t know anything about it at the time! But if you are passionate about something the knowledge will come!

Niche Tip #3: Find a problem in the world and solve it
This is so basic but often gets forgotten! Your readers have a problem. What is it? How can you fix it? What do you know from your own experience that can help them with that problem? Now write about solving that problem. Help your readers!
Niche Tip #4: Will you be able to monetize your topic?/ Will it be profitable?
If you are wanting to make money off a blog (which why wouldn’t you?!) There must be a way to monetize that niche. There are many ways to make money on a blog include
- Ads (require a lot of traffic to make decent money
- Affiliate marketing (make a small percentage off of recommending a product)
- Sponsored posts (a one-time payment for writing a review and recommendation about a product)
- Selling your own goods or services (This is where the true money is!)
Or you might just be interested in sharing your ideas with the world and have no desire to monetize and that’s great! You don’t have to worry about how to monetize your niche. There are plenty of incredible blogs that don’t monetize or wait to monetize until way later down the road. But if you are interested in making money off your blog and want to do that as quickly as possible then you need to make sure you pick a niche that is easily monetized.
Bonus Tip #5: Niche down!… But not right away!
I personally suggest you niche down but give it some time! Pick a few topics within a broader niche to test out. Figure out what gets you the most traffic and then after a month or two niche down. You might start out with a general food blog and you post lots of different recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and dessert but you find that most people are looking for easy, simple, weeknight meals. So niche down to easy, simple, weeknight meals!
